The Company

SPT Theatre Company is the brainchild of four area performers, Doug Elliott, Jane Pini, Gerard Estella, and Janelle Lauer. They formed the company initially because they loved making music and theatre, and they loved doing it together. But then they changed their selfish ways, wrote an it-takes-a-village, heartfelt kind of mission statement, and set out to make it happen. Click here for more information about the members of SPT.

The Name

What's in a name? Probably the most frequently asked question, "What does SPT mean?" Well, if they told you, they'd have to kill you - really. Actually, while it started out meaning something to them, the founders, they've grown to prefer the phonetic pronunciation, "spit." There's something about "Spit Theatre" that forces you to take pause (or at least duck) when someone says it.

The Mission

The mission of SPT Theatre Company is to create an organization that supports, provides for, and expands the artistic opportunities available to performers and arts patrons in the greater Cedar Rapids/Iowa City community. In furthering this mission, SPT strives to coordinate with existing organizations and resources or to create new opportunities and access to new resources when appropriate.

The Board

On May 8, 2006, SPT Theatre Company held the inaugural meeting of its Board of Directors. The board establishes organizational policy, oversees the financial operations of the organization, and leverages financial and organizational resources that further the company's artistic mission.
